Keep Cardinals in Your Yard All Year

Few birds “pop” against a blanket of downy snow like the Cardinal but, treated right, in Southern Ontario these red beauties can fill your yard with splashes of colour and sweet melodies all year.

It’s far from exhausting to attract and keep Cardinals happy when their essential needs for food, water, shelter and nesting sites are met.

Feeding Cardinals

Fill your bird feeder year round with the seed Cardinals like best like Black Oil Sunflower or Safflower Seed, or try our Armstrong™ blends  packed with even more Cardinal-enticing seed types.

Seed Blends:

In addition to attracting Cardinals, these blends offer the seeds-of-choice to draw other fine-feathered species to visit your feeder.

  • Armstrong™ Premium features even more Cardinal favourites such as Red and White Millet to Striped Sunflower, alongside Black Oil and Safflower. This combination, blended with Wheat and Peanuts, helps entice colourful birds like Jays and Nuthatchers.
  • As it’s name suggests, our Armstrong™ Brilliance’s blend of Raisins, Peanuts, and Dried Cherries with Black Oil Sunflower and Safflower, is designed to attract the most colourful of the wild birds, from Grosbeaks, Finches, Jays, to Chickadees.

Treats:

  • Fruit and berries are a natural part of a Cardinal’s diet. Treat the Cardinals in your yard extra special with apple chunks in a Platform Feeder, or plant berry producers like Blackberry, Sumac, Mulberry, and Dogwood. These can also serve double-duty as shelter or perching grounds.
  • The Cardinals in your yard may also enjoy sinking their beak into a block of suet.

Feeder Styles:

“Ground foraging” is popular with Cardinals and they’ll appreciate a sturdy, flat-bottomed feeder that feels secure and “grounded.” Try any of the following:

  • Hopper Feeder
  • Tube Feeder with large holes and a tray
  • Platform Feeder

To increase their comfort in breezy weather, choose a heavy feeder over an easily swayed lightweight feeder, or secure your feeder to a fixed structure like a fence post or pole.

If you’re not seeing many Cardinals at your feeder, try providing fresh seed at their favourite feeding times — early morning and late evening.

Providing Water

Cardinals will often stick around all year, so it’s valuable to provide a birdbath year round. You can use a heater to keep it thawed in the winter. A mister or dripper also makes birdbaths appealing to Cardinals.

Shelter & Nesting Sites

Cardinals are intensely territorial and are known to attack their own reflection. As much as possible, reduce the reflection off of glass surfaces like car and house windows. The agitation of seeing this constant “threat” looking back at them may be enough to drive your Cardinals to relocate.

Foliage that is dense and shrubby is ideal for Cardinals and they’ll often flock to thick evergreen patches.

Cardinals are a pleasant sight in almost any yard. Treat them right, and they’ll be more apt to reward you with their songs and colour all year.
