The Plant Zone Map

Zone Map

The plant zone map gives gardeners and farmers an idea of what varieties of plants can be grown where. It combines data from a number of climatic conditions across the entire country to produce this single map below.  This map is very commonly used in the gardening world to guide gardeners to what kinds of perennials they can grow. However, this map was originally developed in the 1960’s for trees and shrubs. Here in the Niagara Region we are Zone 5-6. In recent years we have had many customers successfully grow many Zone 7-8 “hardy tropical” plants in the Niagara area.  The Niagara Escarpment and the close proximity to Lake Ontario we have a bit of Micro Climate where we are able to have been able to grow some of these different plants.  The epic winter of 2013-2014 may have an effect of what we can grow in the Niagara Region in the future.
